the Process
Designing a call begins with an understanding of how you hunt and the sound you seek.
With what some would think as simple parameters, I start the process with sorting through a diverse deck of wood and materials. Dried, cured, and even stabilized, woods are a must for the correct sound and making the final product last generations. Cutting and boring to specifications that have been developed over years of practice and research, what guides the carbide on the lathe is a steady hand and what the wood shows it can do.
A high-speed finish and polish keep the durability and beauty long-lasting. B.S. Calls have a distinct look - a traditional, old school style that isn’t seen much anymore, other than over the fireplace mantel. But make no mistake - these calls are meant to be hunted. Each barrel and insert are hand made and fitted for each other, each reed and cork cut for your specific call, for the duck or goose sound you are looking for.
Every call as unique as the birds it brings in.
Like each bird sounds a little different from the next, each wood and material elicits a unique sound from the call. I work with domestic hardwoods including hedge, walnut, ash, and maple, as well as exotic hardwoods like cocobolo, African blackwood, and bocote. I also make use of curly maple and burl wood by incorporating acrylics or sleeving to improve their suitability for producing the right sound.

about
One of my earliest memories is walking down to the river through the fields and rain with my Dad and his hunting buddies to lure ducks from the clouded skies .
I never looked back from that early age pursuing ducks, geese, and the various upland birds that together called the Willamette Valley of Oregon home. Chasing birds gave me a love for the diversity of waterfowl - hunting alongside springer spaniels and chocolate labs through those formative years helped me gain an appreciation for the joy and thrill of working with a dog.
After a few short years at Oregon State University, life brought me to Northern Virginia, where I live with my wife and two young sons. Call making, hunting, and the outdoors are my passions, and I aim to educate my sons in those traditions the same way my father raised me. When I’m not making calls, I’m chasing waterfowl across the country, training my red lab, Sully, or casting for brook trout in the Blue Ridge & rockfish and speckled trout in the Chesapeake Bay.
B.S. Calls started as a conversation between two childhood hunting buddies in a duck blind.
I had started making calls the year before, for the small group of hunting friends, and while I moved East, my buddy Matt took off with it in his shop, refining his sound and craftsmanship. In 2015, I was finally able to get my own shop space in Virginia and get back to the lathe. B.S. represents the camaraderie of being afield with friends and family, and the craftsmanship and knowledge that makes it possible.
